Making and Materials: Commonwealth Woods in the House of Commons
2024 marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the modern Commonwealth of Nations. Works from 38 of the 56 countries in the modern Commonwealth are held in Parliament’s Historic Furniture and Decorative Art collection. These objects were given to refurnish the House of Commons following its destruction by bombing in the Second World War. Take a look at a selection of these objects, and explore in detail the wide variety of native woods given from around the world.

A Model Restoration
A model depicting the Elizabeth Tower, made by modelmaker James Mabey around 1857, has received careful restoration.
