Second report scrutinising Brexit-related international agreements published

13 February 2019

The European Union Committee has published its second report in its new role scrutinising Brexit-related treaties.

Background

This report considers six international agreements, which are all reported for information.

  • Agreement on Trade in Wine between the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Government of Australia [CP 8]
  • Agreement between the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Government of New Zealand on Sanitary Measures Applicable to Trade in Live Animals and Animal Products [CP 12]
  • Agreement between the United Kingdom and the United States of America on Prudential Measures regarding Insurance and Reinsurance [CP 19]
  • Agreement between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Swiss Confederation on Direct Insurance other than Life Insurance [CP 26]
  • Agreement between the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Swiss Federal Council on the International Carriage of Passengers and Goods by Road [CP 5]
  • Agreement between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Swiss Confederation relating to Scheduled Air Services [CP 25]

The report also identifies two issues on which the Committee seeks greater clarity from the Government in future Explanatory Memoranda: the process for amending international agreements after they enter into force; and the extent of Government consultation, particularly with the devolved administrations.

The Committee expects its next report on Brexit-related international agreements to be published in the week commencing 18 February 2019.
