The 18th Century opened with the creation of Great Britain, following the Act of Union in 1707 between England and Scotland.

A cultural high point in the century was achieved by the age of Enlightenment, but the American War of Independence and the French Revolution sent shock waves through the country and by the end of the Century Europe was embroilled in the Napoleonic Wars.

Politics in the 18th Century was dominated by Sir Robert Walpole and William Pitt the Younger (see 'Prime Ministers' for images).

In this section there is a selection of images of the leading Parliamentarians of the 18th Century, including Edmund Burke and Charles James Fox, Pitt's great political opponent.
