John Doyle (1797 to1868) was born in Dublin and moved to London in 1821. He was initially a portrait painter but failed to make a living from this and in1827 had taken up lithography and caricature. His work appeared in The Times Newspaper between 1829 and 1851 carrying the signature H.B. Doyles work differed from other cartoonists such as his contemporary James Gillray instead of exaggerated caricatures he created likenesses of his subjects and made only gentle humour in his commentary.
