  • Title: Westminster Hall and New Palace Yard
  • After original by: Thomas Sandby
  • Medium: Oil painting
  • Categories: Buildings
  • Catalogue number: WOA 2271
  • Description: The north front of Westminster Hall with the large arched window flanked by two impressive stone towers dating form Richards remodeling of the Hall in the 1390\'s. For visitors coming to Westminster in medieval times, this façade and the sheer size of the Hall beyond would have dominated the other buildings around New Palace Yard, signaling the importance of the royal palace, the power and the influence of the King and the splendour of his court. This painting records the ramshackle collection of pubs and coffee houses which had gathered in front of the Hall, hiding from view the lower parts of the twin towers, which were not exposed until 1807.
