  • Description: When fire destroyed the old Palace of Westminster on 16 October 1834 various artists captured the buildings on the river front as they perished. The fire here reached its height from 11pm. This painting shows, from left to right, John Soane\'s Parliament offices, the Painted Chamber, the House of Commons library, the residence of the Clerk of the House, the east end of St. Stephen\'s Chapel (the House of Commons Chamber), the Speaker\'s House, with Westminster Hall and Westminster Abbey behind. The artist is unknown.
