  • Title: House of Lords from Old Palace Yard, 1834
  • Artist: Robert William Billings
  • Medium: Watercolour
  • Categories: Buildings
  • Catalogue number: WOA 1660
  • Description: Robert William Billing\'s watercolour shows the ruins of the House of Lords as seen from Old Palace Yard after the fire of 16 October 1834. This was the first part of the Palace seen burning by onlookers. The roof of the Lords Chamber behind collapsed at 7.30pm and the frontage fell down in stages through the night. The morning after, the damage was clear, with only the empty shell of the building still remaining. The medieval walls of the old House of Lords Chamber were damaged but still standing. They were reroofed and the building, with its characteristic \'Diocletian\' windows, was used as the temporary House of Commons Chamber until 1851.

Acquisition: Sir L. Harmsworth gift, 1929.
