  • Description: It was through the influence of his uncle, the 3rd Marquess of Salisbury, that Balfour was drawn into politics, becoming Conservative Member of parliament for Hertford in 1847. His political career flourished during the 1880\'s and 1890\'s, holding succession of offices. He became Prime Minister in 1902, when Salisbury resigned from the premiership after four terms in office. Balfour tendered his resignation in 1905. During The First World War his influence was bought to bear in the Coalition Government. He became first Lord of the Admiralty in May 1915 and foreign secretary from 1916-19, in which he was responsible for the Balfour Declaration. After the end of the war he played a key role in the peace treaties.
