  • Description: Commissioned as part of a series as tribute to the work of sir Robert Cooke, a former Chairman of the Advisory committee on works of art who, as special advisor to the palace of Westminster from 1980 until untimely death in January 1987, provided much of the motivation for the historically accurate restorations of many of the prominent interiors of the palace, an initiative which is still actively pursued by the parliamentary facilities department.

A total of four interiors were painted by Buchanan all of which had been parts of the building Sir Robert had been involved with the programme of refurbishment. Much of the original colour and texture was returned to these interiors by the careful research and reinstatement of wallpapers and curtains to the original design specifications.

In the Members\' Dining Room, which had been doubled in size in 1937 to give its present generous proportions, investigations into the original painted decoration of the coffered wooden ceiling led to many layers of later overpaint being scraped away to find the original coloured design.
