Palliser creates a feeling of dignity and command in this particularly striking and challenging portrait. As a character study it \'contains a painting within a portrait\', perhaps a fitting comment on the artist\'s style by another of his eminent sitters, Graham Greene. His traditionalist approach, in the face of contemporary trends in painting, has received critical acclaim.

Lord Ashdown first entered politics as First Secretary to the UK Mission (Foreign Office) to the UN in Geneva in 1971 where he remained until 1976.Ashdown was leader of the Social and Liberal Democrats, 1988-9 and the Liberal Democrats 1988-99. In 2001 Ashdown was created Baron Ashdown of Norton-Sub-Hamdon, in the County of Somerset and from 2002-06 was the High Representative of the International Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
