Government Ministers may make oral or written statements to Parliament. Oral statements usually address major incidents, government policies or actions and those made in the Commons are usually repeated in the House of Lords. Written statements are normally used to put the day-to-day business of government on the official record and in the public domain.

A weekly Business Statement made by the Leader of the House of Commons sets out the future business of the House.

Occasionally, a personal statement may be made by an MP or a member of the House of Lords.
