Staff numbers and wages (2022)

Please include the information for each of the following financial years; 2019/20, 2020/21, 2021/22:

  1. The number of staff working at the organisation in each of these financial year
  2. The total wage bill for each of these years
  3. Please also provide me with the current headcount of staff.

1) The number of staff working at the organisation in each of these financial years

In the first instance, please note that we hold staff numbers for both the House of Commons and Parliamentary Digital Service (PDS) together, and this is information we have therefore considered for this part of your request.

This information is held by the House of Commons. We hold staff numbers for the House and PDS in the financial years specified.

Regarding information for the period 2021/21, please note that while this is held by the House it is also already available from a public source. This information is exempt from disclosure in accordance with section 21(1) and (2)(a) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA), which removes a public authority from the obligation to provide access to information which is already in the public domain. This is an absolute exemption and the public interest test does not apply.
It may help you to know that this information was published in our HR and Diversity Annual Report, and this can be found on our webpages.

Regarding information for the periods 2019/20 and 2021/22, this is held by the House and is provided in the table below:

This information is held by the House of Commons. The House holds the staff wages and salary costs for the financial years requested.

While the House holds this information however, it is also already available from a public source. This information is therefrore exempt from disclosure in accordance with section 21(1) and (2)(a) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA), which removes a public authority from the obligation to provide access to information which is already in the public domain. This is an absolute exemption and the public interest test does not apply.

3) Please also provide me with the current headcount of staff.

This information is held by the House of Commons. As of 14 December 2022, the current headcount for House of Commons and PDS staff is 3,108.
