Response

While other areas of the House of Commons also provide training to Members, we have interpreted your request to be about training the House of Commons Library provides, because you have specified a relevant page on the Commons Library website.

1. What subjects are covered in the Induction for new MPs?

This information is held by the House of Commons.

The Commons Library provide regular Library introduction training sessions to Members’ staff. They are the primary audience, but MPs will join their staff very occasionally. Course content covers accessing Library research, online resources, and where to find further training and support.

2. What subjects are covered in Trainings for established MPs
and
3. How frequent are each of the trainings for established MPs

Some information is held by the House of Commons in relation to these parts of your request. The Commons Library offers a range of training for using online information resources. They are open to anyone with a parliamentary network account, which includes Members of Parliament and their staff.

Spreadsheet showing the titles of courses that have been scheduled at least once since the start of 2019, and how often in each year they have been scheduled.   This information is correct as at 15 November 2021.

In addition to these scheduled courses, the Commons Library also offers a tailored training service called Navigate. This allows Members, their staff or House of Commons staff to request a session focusing on the online resources that interest them, at a convenient date and time. The table below shows how frequently this course has been scheduled.

4. How many MPs of each party have completed the trainings for each of the subjects?

This information is not held by the House of Commons. We do not hold figures on attendance of training broken down by party.

5. Specifically how many MPs of each party have completed the trainings on Unconscious Bias?

This information is not held by the House of Commons. The Commons Library does not provide training on Unconscious Bias.

However, it may help you to know that the Learning and Organisational Development team of the House of Commons ran a small pilot of Unconscious Bias training in 2020. That said, we do not hold figures on attendance of this pilot broken down by party.
