Hansard (2018)

Request

  1. How many pages of Hansard are printed each year, and the cost of this.
  2. Could Hansard be made available just as an app for MPs / others?

Response

Please note that the House of Commons and the House of Lords are separate public authorities in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA), but Hansard is the Official Report for each of the two Houses.  Our answers below apply to information relating to Commons Hansard; for information relating to the House of Lords Hansard, please contact the House of Lords directly.

  1. How many pages of Hansard are printed each year, and what is the cost of this?
The House of Commons holds information related to the Commons Hansard.  In 2016/17, the last complete financial year for which data is available, 15,664 pages of the House of Commons Daily Hansard were printed at a cost of £124,241.
  2. Could Hansard be made available just as an app for MPs/others?
This information is held by the House of Commons.  Since 2015, Hansard has been available via the HousePapers app, which can be installed from the Apple Store or Google Play. In addition, Hansard has been available to read online since 2000.
These and other initiatives have enabled the House to achieve significant reductions in both the volume and cost of printed material. More information about the House’s progress toward digital delivery of its key documents is given in recent House of Commons Commission Annual Reports.
