Response

The House of Commons does not offer a crèche.  There is however a nursery.  We have sought to answer your questions in respect of the nursery.

1. The cost of running the nursery

Costs of running the nursery and income received from fees charged to users for the current financial year (2012/13) are expected* to be:

2. The fees charged to MPs for using the nursery

Fees which apply to all users of the nursery are:

3. Is this classed as an expense for MPs

This is not classed as an expense for Members. 

For information on what can be claimed as expenses for Members please contact the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) who are responsible for paying MPs’ salaries and processing expenses claims.

 

4. Do any other Houses of Parliament staff and/or users use the service

Parliamentary pass holders are able to use the nursery service. Current eligible groups are: Members of each House, Members’ staff of each House, staff of both Houses and PICT employees, Press Gallery media pass holders, Whitehall parliamentary pass holders, contractors situated on the parliamentary estate.

 

5. The fees charged to these staff members and HP staff

Fees charged are the same for all user groups as shown in response to question 2.

 

6.  How much did the nursery receive in fees in total for the year up to the end of March 2013 (or for the 12 months up to the most recent period readily available)?

Income generated from fees for the nursery for the financial year 2012/13 was £179,900.

 

7.  What were the costs of running the nursery over this time?

Operating costs of the nursery for year the financial year 2012/13 were £280,452

 

8.  How many children of passholders have been looked after by the nursery over the same period?

During the financial year 2012/13, 31 children attended the nursery.

 

9.  How many children of non-passholders have been looked after by the nursery over the same period?

Only Parliamentary pass holders are able to use the nursery service. Current eligible groups are: Members of each House, Members’ staff of each House, staff of both Houses and PICT employees, Press Gallery media pass holders, Whitehall parliamentary pass holders, contractors situated on the parliamentary estate.
