Response

  1. How much was spent on the Speaker's residence (e.g. council tax, repairs etc.) broken down for the following years: 2015, 2016 and 2017?
This information is held by the House of Commons.  An amount of information is already in the public domain, as published FOI responses on our Disclosures pages.  This data is:
    •        From 1 May 2013 to date of request, 24 March 2015
    •        From 1 February 2015 to December 2015
    •        From 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2016
As the information for this part of your request is reasonably accessible to you otherwise than under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA), this part of your request is refused. In refusing your request the House is applying the exemption set out in section 21 (1) and (2) (a) of the FOIA.  This is an absolute exemption and the public interest test does not apply.
Spending on the Speaker’s apartment from 1 January 2017 to 29 December 2017
Just like any work requests in the House of Commons, requests for maintenance and repairs of the Speaker’s residence are recorded in a database.  The above information has been arrived at by keyword search of this system and therefore may not be exhaustive.
In addition, some general maintenance tasks (for example, the window handle refit in January 2017) are undertaken across different locations on the parliamentary estate under one general maintenance contract, and the costs of these tasks cannot always be disaggregated to specific locations.
The cost of Council Tax for the Speaker’s residence was £1345 in 2015, £1338 in 2016 and £1376 in 2017.

  2. How much was spent on the Speaker's official travel (e.g. train tickets, plane fares, taxis etc.) broken down for the following years: 2015, 2016 and 2017?
This information is held by the House of Commons.  However, in line with the House’s commitment to greater transparency, details of the Speaker’s official travel costs are proactively published on the parliamentary website her on an annual basis.  Information up until the end of December 2017 can be found on our transparency pages.
As the information you request is reasonably accessible to you otherwise than under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA), this part of your request is refused. In refusing your request the House is applying the exemption set out in section 21 (1) and (2) (a) of the FOIA.  This is an absolute exemption and the public interest test does not apply.
