Response

Specifically, you asked how many copies are purchased of the Daily Telegraph, the Times, the Guardian, the Financial Times, the I, the Daily Mail, the Daily Express, the Sun, the Daily Star and the Morning Star, weekly and for each week in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2106.

Some of this information is held by the House of Commons. Newspapers are purchased by a number of different teams across the House. Comprehensive information covering the entire period requested is maintained only by the House of Commons Library.  Information about newspapers purchased by other teams is not held consistently. Some information is available by week for sitting days in the current year only. Some information is held only for the last month as a whole.

Table 1 containing information for the House of Commons Library for each of the requested years (CSV CSV 1 KB). The information has been compiled using the number of copies per day of the week for each title that was purchased by the House of Commons Library.

Copies have been counted in the following way:
•        Where a copy was received each day Monday to Friday
•        Where a copy of a specific title was received Monday to Thursday (to allow for non-sitting Friday’s and recesses)
•        Where the Saturday edition of a particular title has the same name as the Monday to Friday edition it has been included

In addition, our records show in table 2 the numbers of copies per week of some titles which have been purchased in 2017, when the House was sitting, by other teams. (CSV CSV 1 KB)

Finally, newspapers are purchased and made available by the House at a number of locations across the parliamentary estate. The figures in table 3 show the total number of each title purchased in October 2017 (CSV CSV 1 KB).
