Please can you provide a full list of all Westminster officials (not MPs) who have taken foreign language courses over the past five years, making clear what language(/s) they were learning, and how much their training cost.
We have interpreted “Westminster officials” to mean staff of the administration of the Houses of Parliament. Please note that our response only deals with staff of the administration of the House of Commons. Some staff of the administration are employed in the House of Lords, which is a separate public authority for the purposes of the Freedom of Information Act, therefore you may wish to consider forwarding your request to them.
Information relating to foreign language training to Commons staff is held by the House of Commons. ( CSV 1 KB)
Please note that where the names of the staff attending language courses is known, this information is personal data and is therefore exempt by virtue of section 40 (2) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the exemption for personal information), as disclosure of this information to the public generally, in the House’s view, would not be consistent with data protection principles in the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA). This is an absolute exemption and the public interest test does not apply.
