Clocks (2014)

Request

  1. How many clocks are there in the House of Commons?
  2. How many of them are working (ie, not stopped)?

Response

  1. How many clocks are there in the House of Commons?
At the last count (October 2005), the House of Commons had the following clocks on the estate:
    • 240 Antique mechanical clocks
    • 4 Master clock systems driving 740 slave dials
    • 280 Quartz battery clocks
    • Great Clock
  2. How many of them are working (ie, not stopped)?
No exact records are kept of clocks that are stopped, but at any one time it is estimated that approximately 98% of all the clocks are running with approximately 2% not running either for routine maintenance or unforeseen stoppages.
