Response

  1. Is kosher and halal food stocked and sold in the House of Commons canteen? If so, how much and what type of (i) halal (ii) kosher?
    And
  2. Please can I have sale figures in the canteen for (i) halal (ii) kosher for the past three years?
    And
  3. Is halal meat ever used in general dishes in the canteen, if so are customers notified?
This information not held by the House of Commons because no kosher or halal foods are stocked for sale in the cafeterias. Kosher meals and halal slaughtered meats may be purchased on a special order at a customer’s request for private banqueting functions only.
  4. Have there been requests from staff for the canteen to stock kosher or halal food?
This information is already publicly available. All customer feedback is published annually and is available on our transparency pages. Specific requests to stock kosher or halal food are not recorded or collated separately.
As the information you request is reasonably accessible to you otherwise than under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 your FOI request is refused. In refusing your request the House is applying the exemption set out in section 21 (1) and (2) (a) of the FOI Act. This is an absolute exemption and the public interest test does not apply.
  5. How many (i) kosher (ii) halal meals have been served at the House of Commons event for the past three years?
A total of 13 complete kosher meals have been purchased upon customer request specifically for events in the past 3 years.
A record of the number of halal meals served at private functions is not held by the House of Commons. Owing to the nature and diversity of our business, it is not possible to adopt adequate segregation techniques and therefore we do not serve finished halal meals.
However, upon request from an event organiser we can prepare meals using pre-stunned halal slaughtered meat and poultry. This meat comes from certified and trusted suppliers that meet the standards for recognised accreditation schemes such as the RSPCA’s Freedom Food and Red Tractor.
Our policies regarding halal and kosher food are available in the Responsible Catering information sheet which is available on the Parliamentary website.
