In 2014, POST ran its first interdisciplinary programme of work focused on big data.
Big Data POSTnotes
Recent years have seen an explosion in the quantity, complexity, immediacy and accessibility of data. In the near future, public policy decisions will increasingly be influenced by ‘Big Data’.
Under the guidance of the POST Board, the POST team spent much of 2014 undertaking a rigorous programme of analysis of big data and public policy. This work has investigated the use of big data across several policy areas, drawing on insights from a wide range of research disciplines.
The core of the programme focused on the research and publication of nine POSTnotes that covered the use of big data in security, health, business, transport, social media, citizen science, biomedical research and the smart metering of utilities.
