We know that some universities engage more with Parliament than others.
A study of select committee witnesses over 2013-14 showed that around 75% of academic witnesses came from Oxbridge or Russell Group universities, and only 9% of evidence submitted came from institutions in the north of England.
135 of the 154 higher education institutions that submitted to the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) mentioned substantive engagement with Parliament in at least one of their impact case studies. The ten universities that submitted the most case studies mentioning parliament were all Russell Group Universities.
We want to do something about this. Parliament wants academics from all institutions to feel able and supported to contribute their research to the work of Parliament. That’s why we are organising a one-day event targeted specifically at people working at non-Russell Group universities. The aim is to train, empower and encourage academics and the staff that support them such that they feel confident to work with Parliament, or encourage others to do so.
The event will include the following sessions:
- The value of non-Russell Group universities to Parliament
- How does Parliament use research?
- Why engage with Parliament?
- Finding your opportunity
- Working with Select Committees
- Communicating with Parliament: a workshop
- Next steps
The event will be led by parliamentary staff, with contributions from academics who have engaged with Parliament previously.
Lunch will be provided and there will also be opportunities for networking with colleagues from other institutions as well as parliamentary staff.
The event is free to attend. It is being funded by the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) with additional support provided by Nottingham Trent University.
It is expected that attendees will pay for their own travel, however, if this cost would prevent you from attending, please contact Dr Sarah Foxen at POST (firstname.lastname@example.org) as support may be available.
