I would not be prepared to put up with headaches, joint pain, nausea, and sleep disruption from electromagnetic pollution within my property of 160 to 800 times the magnitude of a mobile phone transmitter.

I am strongly opposed to smart meters in my house. They are a health hazard to the people living in the house. This has been amply demonstrated by research. They are intrusive to the privacy of the occupants of the house making the utility companies aware of every movement of the people in the house at all times - an infringement og their fundamental right to free movement in their house! Energy costs are likely to rise. These meters would allow utility companies to set tariffs related to time of use. Money spent on these meters could be put to better use at this time of austerity.

I strongly oppose installing a smart meter in my house. I am aware that research done has established that smart meters are a health hazard to people living in the house. They are an intrusive to the privacy of the people living in the house. They inform the utility companies of the movements of people inside the house which is none of their business and is something they have no right to be aware of. I am also concerned of the likelihood of increase in cost of energy by making assailable to the utility companies to set tariffs based on time of usage.

I have serious concerns about the safety of these meters in terms of the health of the residents of any home where these are installed. I have seen some cases in Australia where people where being hospitalized after these meters were installed. People who were healthy before became suddenly very ill. We are rushing ahead too quickly with all this "wonderful" technology with totally inadequate testing of the long-term effects on the human population. There certainly should be NO hint of any enforcement by energy companies, local councils or the gov't on installing such things in our homes. We have the right to live healthily without interference.

I would hate one of these hideous meters in my home. I am already feeling ill with all the mobile phone masts that appear to be on every street corner with more and more frequency (plus more and more 'frequency' even!) Having one of these in my home would be like having a mobile phone mast right up close, pulsing away 24/7. There is no way that anyone is going to install one of these into my home! This is all about saving money for the shareholders and doing away with the meter reader man (as these meters can be 'read' from the van driving by). I am sick and getting sicker with all the technology that is taking over too fast. Children are becoming more and more ill and depressed with so much electro magnetic smog saturating the air!!

The harmful effects of radio-frequency radiation (RFR) have been investigated by the scientific community for some time. One review of the literature in the area was originally published in 2007, and has been kept updated since, by a group called the Bioinitiative Report, a summary of whose findings can be accessed at: http://www.bioinitiative.org/conclusions/ The policy recommendations at the time of publication of the original report were an immediate restraint on further roll-out of wireless technology based on compelling evidence of harm. The warnings sounded at that time have only been repeated more strongly since by this group, as further evidence supporting the intial conclusions has emerged. Thus, there is significant evidence of harm from modern wireless technologies (including smart meters), especially from chronic exposure which has become an issue for all of us in recent years. The risk applies to everyone but is especially pronounced for infants and children. These concerns apply to smart meters just as much as any other wireless device, if not more so, as my understanding is that they are considerably higher in their power output than other wireless devices such as ‘smart appliances’ or WiFi routers. Based on the evidence I have read, it is the rapid pulsing nature of the microwave emissions from smart meters that makes these devices especially concerning in terms of potential damage to health. Finally, smart meters are known to pulse very frequently based on independent studies (up to more than once per minute), despite “official” assurances that they are only active a few times a day. In summary, smart meters are a liability to health, especially with chronic and cumulative exposure. There is no justification to adopt the technology, based on this alone. They also present a more immediate danger – fire risk – and a number of fires, some fatal, have been documented. As I understand, this risk alone has resulted in rollback of the programme in at least one Canadian province. Smart meters have also been found to almost universally increase consumer bills, which is a major objection for many. They are a potential gross invasion of privacy, and contravene many important principles of civil liberty. The installations which have already been made have not, for the large part, been made with informed consent and I suppose that many who have smart meters already would reverse their decision if they knew the evidence of harmful effects, or simply when they notice their bills go up considerably. I for one do not want one (there is no legal obligation at present, and that should remain the case), and nor do I want hazardous microwave exposure from neighbours’ properties. Growing awareness of the issues surrounding smart meters has resulted in considerable opposition worldwide, such that they have been rightly rejected in some territories. The UK should follow suit, in the best interests of consumers’ health, finances and freedom.

The government proposition for installing smart meters make it sound all so wonderful, but it does not address the invasion of privacy, the increased load on national health care from the effects of EMFs on the sensitive. Until a better technology is developed that does not have these negative side effects, they should not be installed on or in anyone's home.
