05 March 2018 at 14:22All powers currently with the EU and which are in terms of the Scotland Act, not retained by Westminster must be returned to Scottish parliament. Scotland voted to remain in the EU and Scotland's CONSENT must be given in any negotiations with EU and any other trading partners which involve devolved matters. Consultation with the Scottish parliament is not good enough in a Union of equals'. Scotland is outnumbered by a factor of ten in any decision making process at present. It is not democratic if these powers which constitutionally should rest with Scottish parliament are 'taken back' by Westminster.

05 March 2018 at 13:52All issues that are devolved should go to the devolved governments after Brevity, NOT to Westminster, end of story. It is quite incredible that we even need to have this conversation. If Westminster truly valued and respected the devolved areas of Britain then this wouldn't even be an issue. The arrogance and disrespect being displayed by the Conservative government in this matter is astounding.

05 March 2018 at 13:46How well do you think the UK and Scottish Parliaments currently work together? - My reply. They are not The Scottish Assembly is doing its best to disrupt the UK. How could the UK and Scottish Governments work together better? My Reply. The SNP and Green Party have made it clear they have no intention of working with the UK Government. How should the UK and Scottish Parliaments take better care to ensure Scottish and UK Ministers work together in the best interests of Scotland. My reply. I don't think there is any way the current Scottish Assembly will work with the UK Government. The Scottish Assembly should only deal with devolved matters. UK mater are the responsibility of the UK Government.

05 March 2018 at 13:43The way I see it is that the UK Government is a single body with the power and the obligation to govern over all of the UK as one. We are currently one country, called the United Kingdom of Great Britian and Northen Island, led united by one queen, one prime minister and one government. Accordingly, giving Scotland more power would make as much sense as giving London it's own government. From reading the above comments, I've gotten the feeling that the Scottish problem is that they are all aligned with the left and are against the Torie's policies. If so the solution is simple. Instead of voting for SNP, which has no serious word in our government (not due to the fact that they are 'riddiculed and ignored' as stated by many above, only because they were elected by just a small portion of our country and therfore have no voice, the same way that the Green Party and others are, relativly speaking, ignored) and instead vote for the Labour Party or any other party they feel would suit their neeeds. Basicaly, my point is that the Scottish should begin acting united as one country together with the rest of us. They should understand that no one has anything against them. We are all part of one great country with a great government. (Which isn't the English Government, only the UK Government, meaning that England doesn't have any power and doesn't lord over anyone else and we are all in it together.) If they are opposed to any of the policies of the current Govenment, they are democraticaly entitled to vote for others in the next GE. The same applies to Brexit. I am also anti Brexit, but I face the fact, we lost. It's to bad and I hope the Government will do their best to ensure that the wishes of the majority of my fellow Brits are carried out fully. That's called democracy. I didn't begin demanding that London leave the UK, even though we all voted Remain. Long Live our united great govenment.

05 March 2018 at 13:40The UK government needs to show far more concern and respect for the needs and wishes of the people of Scotland, and a lot more respect for the elected Scottish government. It is a disgrace when the UK govt's Secretary of State for Scotland publicly refers to the Scottish First Minister as being "up to her old tricks again". The role of the SoS should be to amplify the voice of Scotland in Westminster - not the other way round, and certainly not to obstruct the Scottish FM in her efforts to preserve and advance Scottish interests. It doesn't matter how many procedures and policies you put in place while the Westminster attitude to Scotland basically remains "Scots should be seen and not heard". Scotland will be devastated by Brexit, which is why a large majority of Scots voted against it. There is no point in the UK govt agonising about threats to the Union while it continues to ride roughshod over the interests of the countries of which it is composed. If the Union is really so "precious" to you, you need to listen to us and accommodate *our* democratic voice too. At a time when the UK government is prepared to turn everything upside down in order to get a Brexit that Scotland did not vote for, there is simply no excuse for it not also being willing to make the changes that would be required to allow Scotland to at least remain within the Single Market and the Customs Union. If we in Scotland are to have any chance at all of addressing the looming crisis caused by our ageing population, we also urgently need control of our own immigration policy. Unlike in rUK, most people in Scotland know that migrants make a huge contribution, not just to our economy but also to our wider society. We have an acute need for population growth in Scotland. It is neither democratic, nor just, nor sustainable for the UK government's Scotland policies to be determined by what is acceptable to voters in England. Finally, don't even think of weakening our devolved powers on the road to a Brexit that Scots resoundingly rejected. To do so would be to add even more insult to what is already extremely grave injury. The same applies to any attempt by Westminster to block a second independence referendum. Literally the only reason Scotland is being given for being dragged out of the EU against its will is that it is part of the UK. To attempt to also prevent us voting on whether or not we still want to remain in a UK that so grievously ignores our voice would be to compound the injustice and create huge and enduring anger and resentment.

05 March 2018 at 13:40It is evident from the utter lack of respect shown by the UK govt/Secretary of State for Scotland towards the Joint Ministerial Committee that the commitment to upholding Scottish devolution and, by default, respect for the Scottish parliament by the UK government is close to non-existent. I feel this is a symptom of a deep malaise which is doing untold damage to devolution and democracy in Scotland and the UK as a whole. The minimal number and lack of substantive content of JMC meetings has gone totally against the expectations of the Scottish govt who prepared in good faith to participate as equal partners. To say that I am angry and disgusted with this state of affairs is an understatement, given the importance of the implications of the UK leaving the EU. This is just ONE example of weak interaction between the UK government/parliament and the Scottish government/parliament which, from what I understand, is largely due to a scandalous level of disrespect for and absence of commitment on the part of the UK government to working positively and constructively with the Scottish government (and consequently Scottish parliament) on Brexit and other relevant matters (devolved or reserved). The same lamentably unsatisfactory situation also appears to exist between the Welsh Assembly. The solution to this serious problem is obvious. The UK government & parliament must uphold the highest respect and total commitment to the administrations of the three devolved administrations.

05 March 2018 at 13:30Scotland can manage its own affairs. We don't need Wesrtminster. They are trying to dismantle devolution. We need independence.

05 March 2018 at 13:30Presently, on Brexit, the Scottish and Westminster governments do not appear to be working well together. The Uk gov have ignored the competent detailed comments/analysis produced by Scottish gov that outlines what is considered best for the people of Scotland. UK is not a union of equals. We have always been dominated by the larger country of England and experience and history have repeatedly shown that a Uk gov can not and will not consider or know what is best for Scotland. The only way both governments could work together is for there to be genuine respect and acceptance by the UK gov that Holyrood is best placed to know and fulfil what is best for Scotland and for Uk gov to treat Scotland as EQUAL member of Union of NATIONS, Our Scottish gov have made great choices that support the people of Scotland using the lesser amount of revenue returned to Scotland. More could be achieved if more powers were available and the Scot gov were not repeatedly having to mitigate the extremes of austerity imposed from Westminster.

05 March 2018 at 13:11My view is that the Scottish and Westminister governments work together badly, due to the overbearing attitude of Westminster in what was intended as a union of equals. Westminster = The English Parliament and English issues. They would ld work better together if Scotland were independent, or minimally operating under devo max (as promised in The Vow) and under the Smith Commission, neither of which has been significantly or honestly implemented. The SNP is actively working for Scotland, the others (except Scottish Greens) are British Nationalist parties acting in Westminster’s interests, only. Scottish Independence is the only solution to the current, defective union.

05 March 2018 at 14:22I firmly believe devolution is a failed and very expensive experiment Even with all the devolved powers that Holyrood has at its disposal it is just a glorified regional council. It has caused massive division between separatists and unionists. To summarise just close it down.
