The dissolution of Parliament took place on Thursday 30 May 2024. All business in the House of Commons and House of Lords has come to an end. There are currently no MPs and every seat in the Commons is vacant until after the general election on 4 July 2024.

Lord Butler of Brockwell and Peter Riddell are among the witnesses who will appear before the Joint Committee tasked with recommending a way forward for the Palace of Westminster Restoration and Renewal Programme.

Background

The Joint Committee on the Palace of Westminster, co-chaired by the Leader of the House of Commons and the Leader of the House of Lords, will hear evidence from a wide range of witnesses.

The Committee was appointed by the two Houses of Parliament in July 2015 to consider the restoration and renewal of the Palace of Westminster.  The Committee's main task is to make a recommendation to both Houses about the best way to approach the Restoration and Renewal Programme, a major programme of repair and conservation which is intended to start in the early 2020s.

The Joint Committee will also hear evidence from representatives from the following organisations on Monday 7 March:

  • Institution of Civil Engineers
  • Royal Institute of British Architects
  • Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
