The State Opening of Parliament 

The UK general election took place on Thursday 4 July 2024. The new Parliament met on Tuesday 9 July 2024 for the election of the Speaker and swearing-in of MPs and Lords. The State Opening of Parliament and The King’s Speech will take place on Wednesday 17 July 2024.

Members of the House of Lords debated the Science and Technology Committee report ‘Genomic Medicine’ in a debate on Wednesday 9 June, in the House of Lords

Lord Patel, who chaired the Science and Technology Committee’s inquiry into genomic medicine, introduced the debate which covered the development and integration of genetic and genomic services into the NHS, problems with the current provision of services, the bringing together of molecular pathology and genetics laboratories and the challenges of storing and interpreting the vast sources of data that will accompany such tests.

The ethical, legal and social implications of direct-to-consumer genetic tests for common complex diseases were also discussed during the debate.

The debate included contributions from the following Members of the House:
