Description

The United Kingdom's journey to democracy is set out in this interactive Houses of History timeline resource. It takes students on a journey through eight centuries of history beginning with the 1215 Magna Carta.

Time required: 30 minutes plus optional writing activity

Students will:

  • Follow an historical chronology of 30 significant moments in the journey to democracy
  • Watch animations of the 1512 fire in the Palace of Westminster to the execution of Charles I
  • Create a project from a template of a newspaper article and add images and quotations collected from the timeline
  • Write an article about the abolition of hereditary peers in the House of Lords

Learning outcomes

All students should:

  • Learn about the struggle for democracy as power shifted from the monarch and nobles to universal suffrage (the Reform Acts) and votes for all at 18 in 1969
  • Find out more about the English Civil War, the events leading up to the execution of Charles I and the rule of Oliver Cromwell
  • Understand an historical chronology and, using this, learn about significant events in the history of democratic change

Most students should:

  • Read longer authoritative articles as they explore eight centuries of key moments and find out more about the history of modern democracy
  • Evaluate a range of historical sources through images, animations, articles and links to further information on recommended websites
  • Consider significant events and people campaigning for democratic change

Houses of History’s journey to democracy section requires Flash version 10 or later. You can download this free software, the latest version is: Flash plug-in
