Bahrain: Protest
To ask Her Majesty's Government, further to the Written Answer by Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon on 7 June 2017 (HL8193), what assessment they have made of whether the meeting at which five protesters were killed in Diraz in June 2017 constituted an illegal gathering; and what assessment they have made of the comment by a UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention in a letter to the government of Bahrain dated 9 June 2017 that the response of that government to protests in Diraz amounted to the “criminalisation of the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression”.

We understand that the investigation into the deaths of protesters during the security operation to clear the gathering is ongoing. We urge a swift and thorough investigation by the Bahraini Public Prosecution.
