The Department for Transport is currently in the process of building the Bus Open Data Digital Service. The Digital Service will enable bus operators to publish their data so that it can subsequently be used by application developers to create products to improve journey planning for bus passengers across England.

Live information is in scope to be included in the digital service. Alongside routes, timetable, and fares data, bus operators will be legally required to provide Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) data to the Bus Open Data Digital Service. Application Developers will be able to access this data to build applications, products and services for end users or passengers.

The provision of AVL data, which will be a legal requirement for operators by January 2021, will be an important step towards transforming journey planning for bus users through the use of live information.
