There is a wide range of occupational training available to prisoners. The prison governor works with their education provider to put in place education and training based on the needs of learners in the establishment and the skills in demand by employers in the areas to which prisoners will be released.
Prisoners are allocated to relevant education and training based on an assessment of their learning needs and in response to information advice and guidance by a National Careers Service adviser. Allocation to education and training takes account of career aspirations, as well as sentence plans, to ensure that interventions are appropriately prioritised and sequenced with other rehabilitation activities. Individual prisons may also apply their own local criteria.
We do not collect data centrally on the number of courses that are oversubscribed.
As set out in the White Paper, “Prison Safety and Reform” published in November 2016, we are empowering prison governors to decide how their establishment’s learning offer is arranged, what curriculum is put in place and who delivers the education and training.
