Lords Thursday debates

One Thursday each month, the House of Lords holds four short debates (one hour each) in Grand Committee.

On Thursday 30 January from 1pm, members debated the following subjects:

Low levels of rape prosecution

Members considered the main factors that have led to decades of low levels of rape cases being prosecuted and necessary steps to resolve the situation, in a debate put forward by Baroness Jones of Moulsecoomb (Green).

Copyright and artificial intelligence

Members discussed the impact on creators and the creative industries of the rights reservation model proposed in the government's consultation paper 'Copyright and Artificial Intelligence' on 17 December 2024, in a debate put forward by Lord Foster of Bath (Liberal Democrat).

Office for Students 2025-2030 strategy

Members debated the decision by the Office for Students to pause applications regarding registering institutions, degree-awarding powers and university titles to allow greater focus on the financial sustainability of the sector, in a debate put forward by Lord Willetts (Conservative).

Glorification of terrorism

Members discussed dealing with the glorification of terrorism and terrorists in the United Kingdom, in a debate put forward by Baroness Foster of Aghadrumsee (non-affiliated).

Short debates

Questions for Short Debate are an opportunity for members to draw the government’s attention to concerns and hold it to account. They last for about 60 minutes. A minister or spokesperson responds on behalf of the government.
