Arbitration Bill undergoes Lords line by line examination

Members of the House of Lords concluded their detailed check of the Arbitration Bill in committee stage on Wednesday 11 September.

The Arbitration Bill aims to amend the Arbitration Act 1996, the principal legislation governing arbitrations, settling disputes outside of court, in England and Wales and in Northern Ireland.

Line by line examination

Committee stage is a thorough examination of the individual parts (clauses) of the bill.

Starting from the front of the bill, members worked through the clauses in order, considering changes (amendments) to the wording or proposals for new clauses.

Proposed changes   

Members speaking at committee stage considered amendments on subjects including:

  • arbitration costs
  • safeguarding against fraud and corruption.
