The State Opening of Parliament 

The UK general election took place on Thursday 4 July 2024. The new Parliament met on Tuesday 9 July 2024 for the election of the Speaker and swearing-in of MPs and Lords. The State Opening of Parliament and The King’s Speech will take place on Wednesday 17 July 2024.

Lords concludes examination of Investigatory Powers (Amendment) Bill

Investigatory Powers (Amendment) Bill had its third reading, a chance for members to make sure the eventual law is effective, workable and without loopholes, on Tuesday 30 January.

The Investigatory Powers (Amendment) Bill will amend the existing Investigatory Powers Act 2016 to ensure the UK's investigatory framework is equipped to deal with current and emerging threats.

Third reading

Third reading is the chance for members to ‘tidy up' a bill, making small changes to ensure it is effective.   

No amendments (changes) were put forward ahead of third reading. Members discussed the progress of the bill at the conclusion of its stages through the House of Lords.
