The State Opening of Parliament 

The UK general election took place on Thursday 4 July 2024. The new Parliament met on Tuesday 9 July 2024 for the election of the Speaker and swearing-in of MPs and Lords. The State Opening of Parliament and The King’s Speech will take place on Wednesday 17 July 2024.

The House of Lords discussed housing strategies, UK-Australia-USA security, overhead electrical transmission lines and health workers in Myanmar on Thursday 29 February. 

Short debates  

Questions for Short Debate are an opportunity for members to draw the government’s attention to concerns and hold it to account. They last for about 60 minutes. A minister or spokesperson responds on behalf of the government at the end.  

Lords Thursday debates

One Thursday each month, the House of Lords holds four short debates in Grand Committee. On Thursday 29 February, members debated the following subjects:  

Long-term plan for housing

Members discussed plans to promote a long-term national housing strategy, with cross-party support for its delivery, proposed by the Bishop of Chelmsford. 

AUKUS security partnership

Members debated the AUKUS agreement, the defence and security partnership between the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States, proposed by Lord Risby (Conservative). 

Burying overhead electrical transmission lines

Members discussed the advantages of burying overhead electrical transmission lines, proposed by Lord Swire (Conservative). 

Supporting Myanmar’s health system

Members highlighted role the UK could play in supporting health workers in Myanmar and contributing to the reconstruction of the country’s health system, proposed by Lord Crisp (Crossbench).
