The House of Lords discussed educational trips and exchanges, surveillance technology at protests, supporting minorities in Pakistan and foreign national offenders being incarcerated, in four short debates on Thursday 25 April.

Short debates  

Questions for Short Debate are an opportunity for members to draw the government’s attention to concerns and hold it to account. They last for about 60 minutes. A minister or spokesperson responds on behalf of the government at the end.  

Lords Thursday debates

One Thursday each month, the House of Lords holds four short debates in Grand Committee. On Thursday 25 April, members debated the following subjects:  

Educational trips

The House of Lords debated the importance of educational trips and exchanges from England to other countries, and the measures needed to facilitate them, proposed by Baroness Coussins

Surveillance at protests

Members debated how the UK aligns with United Nations standards on the use of surveillance technology at protestsproposed by Baroness Jones of Moulsecoomb (Green).

Minorities in Pakistan

Members discussed how UK aid is used to support minorities in Pakistan, proposed by Lord Alton of Liverpool (Crossbench). 

Foreign national offenders 

Members drew attention to the proportion of foreign national offenders in prisons, proposed by Lord Jackson of Peterborough (Conservative).
