The UK general election took place on Thursday 4 July 2024. The new Parliament met on Tuesday 9 July 2024 for the election of the Speaker and swearing-in of MPs and Lords. The State Opening of Parliament and The King’s Speech will take place on Wednesday 17 July 2024.

Lords concludes line by line scrutiny of Automated Vehicles Bill

Members of the House of Lords concluded their detailed check of the Automated Vehicles Bill in committee stage, on Monday 15 January 2024.

The Automated Vehicles Bill will implement the recommendations of the four-year review carried out by the Law Commissions of England & Wales and Scotland to set the legal framework for the safe deployment of self-driving vehicles across Great Britain.

Line by line examination 

Committee stage is a thorough examination of the individual parts (clauses) of the bill. 

Starting from the front of the bill, members work through the clauses in order, considering changes (amendments) to the wording or proposals for new clauses.

Proposed changes   

Committee stage took place over two days on Wednesday 10 January and Monday 15 January.

Members speaking on the final day of committee stage put forward amendments (PDF) to the bill on subjects including vehicle testing, safety assessments and how automated vehicles react to emergency service vehicles.
