Investigatory Powers (Amendment) Bill completes committee stage in the Lords

Members of the House of Lords brought their line by line examination of the Investigatory Powers (Amendment) Bill to a close in committee stage on Wednesday 13 December.

The Investigatory Powers (Amendment) Bill will amend the existing Investigatory Powers Act 2016 to ensure the UK's investigatory framework is equipped to deal with current and emerging threats.

Line by line examination

Committee stage is a detailed examination of the separate parts (clauses) of a bill.

Starting from the front, members work through the clauses in order, taking the opportunity to makes changes (amendments) to the wording or for new clauses to be added.

Proposed changes  

Members speaking on the second and final day of committee stage put forward proposed changes (PDF) to the bill on subjects including the interception and examination of communications of members of Parliament and enhancing transparency of national security.
