Prime Minister makes further statement on Algeria

The Prime Minister made a statement on Monday 21 January 2013 updating the House of Commons on the terrorist attack and hostage crisis in Algeria

The Prime Minister confirmed that three British nationals have been killed and a further three are believed to be dead, as is a Columbian national who was resident in Britain.

Opposition Leader, Edward Miliband responded to the statement on behalf of the Opposition.

Hostage crisis in Algeria

On 16 January a terrorist attack on an oil compound took place in eastern Algeria. A number of people were taken hostage, including a number of British nationals.

The Prime Minister previously made a statement on the situation in Algeria in the Commons on Friday 18 January 2013. Video and transcript of those proceedings are available online.

Oral statements

Oral statements are made after Question Time (or at 11am on a Friday) and after any Urgent Questions.

Statements normally relate to matters of policy or government actions. At the end of a statement, MPs can respond or question the government minister on its contents.
