Lords Committee hears evidence on the challenges of providing interpreting and language services in court

Tomorrow, Wednesday 6 November, the House of Lords Public Services Committee will take evidence from interpreter representative and members organisations.

The session will explore the challenges faced by interpreters and translators providing these services in courts and consider how they could be improved or enhanced by various means including the use of technology and boosting interpreter and translator numbers.

The session will start at 11.00am and can be watched live or on demand at Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 3, Palace of Westminster.

Giving evidence will be:

  • Mike Orlov, Director, National Register of Public Services Interpreters (NRPSI);
  • John Worne, Chief Executive, Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL); and
  • Sara Robertson, Chief Executive Officer, Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI).

Questions will include:

  • What are the key issues interpreters face when engaging with interpreting and translation systems in the court?
  • How far do the current and upcoming MoJ approaches ensure high quality interpreting and translation services in the courts?
  • What steps could be taken to boost the number of interpreters and translators engaged in the courts system?
  • What is the role of technology in improving or enhancing interpreting and translation services in the courts?
  • What recommendations should the Committee make to the Government on how to improve interpreting and translation services in the courts?
