Work experience and employer engagement experts give evidence to Lords inquiry into secondary education system

Wednesday 17 May

The House of Lords Education for 11 - 16 Year Olds Committee will continue its inquiry into the challenges and opportunities faced by the secondary education system in England, by hearing from experts in work experience and employer engagement.

The session can be followed live on Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 4, Palace of Westminster on Thursday 18 May from 11am.

Giving evidence at 11am will be:

  • Oli de Botton, CEO, Careers and Enterprise Company
  • Nick Brook, CEO, Speakers for Schools
  • Nick Chambers, CEO, Education and Employers
  • Dr Claire Thorne, Co-CEO, Tech She Can

Questions the committee are likely to ask include:

  • How important is work experience in Key Stages 3 and 4, and how can access to it be improved for all students?

  • Based on your experience working with a wide variety of schools, what can schools learn from each other to improve employer engagement and do you have any specific examples of good practice?

  • What changes could be made to the current curriculum and accountability system to support the delivery of effective careers education in schools?

  • Should a young person's work experience or engagement with employers be credited, for example through a qualification or a certificate? If so, how could this be implemented?
