Lords Commissioner for Standards publishes report into the conduct of Lord Ranger

Tuesday 13 June 2023

The House of Lords Commissioner for Standards has today published a report into the conduct of Lord Ranger.

The Commissioner opened an investigation into the conduct of Lord Ranger following a complaint from Ms Poonam Joshi who waived her right to anonymity in this case.

In the report the Commissioner finds Lord Ranger breached the Code of Conduct and concludes that it be dealt with by way of a public apology. The Commissioner cleared Lord Ranger of a related allegation of inappropriate use of House of Lords catering facilities in relation to a charity event he sponsored in the House.

The Commissioner concludes that Lord Ranger’s breach of the Code should be dealt with by way of a public apology to Ms Joshi as well as undertaking behaviour change training. Lord Ranger has agreed to this remedial action.

Given the nature of the disagreement between Lord Ranger and Ms Joshi and inflammatory statements made on social media by both parties, the Commissioner suggested Ms Joshi may also want to publicly apologise to Lord Ranger for her actions (although he has no power to mandate an apology from someone who is not a Member of the House of Lords). Ms Joshi has agreed to do so.

Both apologies are published as part of today’s report.
