The accountability system in schools will be put under the spotlight as the House of Lords Education for 11 - 16 Year Olds Committee continues its inquiry into the challenges and opportunities faced by the secondary education system in England.

The session can be followed live on Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 2, Palace of Westminster on Thursday 8 June from 11.15am.

Giving evidence will be:

  • Sir Jon Coles, Group Chief Executive, United Learning
  • Professor George Leckie, Professor of Social Statistics, University of Bristol
  • Dave Thomson, Chief Statistician, FFT Education Datalab

Questions the committee are likely to ask include:

  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of using Progress 8 as a measure of school performance?
  • What changes to the accountability system could be made to support schools in offering the curriculum most suitable for their pupils?
  • What might the implications be of including a wider variety of achievements in Progress 8 or elsewhere in the accountability system?
  • What changes would you prioritise making to the accountability system in the 11 to 16 phase, and what would those changes seek to achieve?
