Monday 24 April 2023

Following on from the delivery of the Spring Budget 2023 last month, the House of Lords Public Services Committee will hear evidence from expert witnesses including the Director of the Institute of Fiscal Studies (IFS) exploring the impact of the budget and the current economic situation on the delivery of public services.

The session will take place on Wednesday 26 April and will start at 3.00pm. It can be watched live or on demand on Parliament TV or in person in Committee Room 4, Palace of Westminster.

Giving evidence will be:

  • Paul Johnson, Director, Institute of Fiscal Studies; and
  • Charlotte Pickles, Director, Reform.

Questions for discussion will include:

  • What do you predict will be the impact of the budget, and of the current economic outlook, on demand for public services? What impact will there be on the cost of delivering services?
  • How effective will the Government’s measures on childcare be towards the stated aim of increasing employment and growing the workforce?
  • What impact will changes to capability assessments have for the people who receive health related benefits, and for their participation in the labour market?
  • What more could the Government have done in the budget to support public services?
