Lords to question experts on the use of advanced algorithmic tools
Monday 11 October 2021
Tomorrow the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee will be questioning experts on advanced algorithmic tools already in use for the application of the law, as it continues its inquiry into new technologies and the application of the law.
The witnesses will discuss facial recognition and a prisoner categorisation tool including efficacy, proportionality, and wider issues on the impact of such tools.
Giving evidence will be:
- Professor Karen Yeung, Interdisciplinary Professorial Fellow in Law, Ethics and Informatics, Birmingham Law School
- Mr Peter Dawson, Director, Prison Reform Trust
- Ms Silkie Carlo, Director, Big Brother Watch
Questions the committee is likely to ask include:
- Two tools we have available to us are human judgement and algorithmic capabilities. How can we get the best out of both in conjunction?
- What should be considered before a tool is deployed? How can impact assessment processes be most meaningful?
- What safeguards should be in place to strike the right balance between using information to protect while avoiding infringements on liberty?
- How would you characterise the legal framework around advanced technologies in the justice system?
The session will take place on Tuesday 12 October at 10.30am and can be followed on Parliament TV.
