Lords Constitution Committee to hear from new President of the Supreme Court

The House of Lords Constitution Committee will next week take evidence from Lord Reed, President of the Supreme Court and Lord Hodge, Deputy President of the Supreme Court.

The session will be Lord Reed's first appearance before a Parliamentary Select Committee since taking over as President of the Supreme Court.

The evidence session will start at 10:30am on Wednesday 4 March in Committee Room 1 of the House of Lords.

Areas the session will cover include:

  • The role of the Supreme Court in protecting the constitution and how the witnesses see the Court's role in respect of the relationship between government and Parliament.
  • Whether the Miller cases have improved public understanding of the Supreme Court – how the Court tries to explain its role to the public.
  • Should there be greater political involvement in the appointment of senior judges?
  • The steps the Supreme Court is taking to ensure a wide and diverse pool of candidates apply for future vacancies at the Court.
