Dissolution of Parliament

The dissolution of Parliament took place on Thursday 30 May 2024. All business in the House of Commons and House of Lords has come to an end. There are currently no MPs and every seat in the Commons is vacant until after the general election on 4 July 2024.

UK policy on Middle East – Gulf experts give evidence

On Wednesday 9 November the House of Lords Committee on International Relations will question two expert commentators on the Gulf, as its inquiry into the transformation of power in the Middle East continues.

The Committee's investigation is looking at economic, political and social trends in the region and examining the implications for UK Government policy.

At 10.30am the Committee will hear from two experts in the field. Dr Christopher Davidson, Reader in Middle East politics, Durham University, and Mr Michael Stephens, Research Fellow Middle East; Head of RUSI Qatar, Royal United Services Institute, will both give evidence.

They will answer questions on areas such as:

  • UK policy following the Arab Spring
  • Economic relations with Gulf States
  • The case for economic reform across the region
  • The impact of Brexit on UK relations with the region, including the prospect of a free trade agreement
  • The impact of the nuclear deal in Iran

The session will start at 10:30am on Wednesday 9 November, and be held in Committee Room 3A of the House of Lords.
