Lords to question expert on climate change policy after Brexit

The EU Energy and Environment Sub-Committee will continue its short inquiry on environment and climate change policy after Brexit on Wednesday 23 November. The Committee will hear evidence from Matthew Bell, CEO for the Committee on Climate Change.

The Committee on Climate Change is the independent advisor to Parliament, and the Government, on climate change issues. In its most recent report it stated that where EU climate mechanisms, such as the Emissions Trading System, are working effectively the UK should either remain in these schemes or replicate them at UK level.

In this session, the Committee will explore the extent to which the UK may wish to co-operate with future EU climate change policy and the implications of leaving these schemes which affect the UK's ability to meet its carbon emissions targets.

Matthew Bell is the CEO for the Committee on Climate Change. The Sub-Committee is likely to ask:

  • Are there any elements of EU climate policy and mechanisms that the UK should particularly maintain, amend or repeal?
  • Will the UK's withdrawal from the EU have an impact on its ability to fund climate change and adaptation measures, either directly or through investor finance? What would be the implications of the UK withdrawing from the EU ETS?
  • What will be the status of the UK's current emissions targets under the UN Framework after Brexit?

The evidence session will take place in Committee Room 2 on Wednesday 23 November in the House of Lords at 11:00am.
