Lords Committee to explore the effectiveness of teaching children how to manage money

On Tuesday 22 November 2016 the House of Lords Committee on Financial Exclusion will hear evidence about financial education in schools.

This evidence session is part of the Committee's inquiry into financial exclusion and access to mainstream financial services.

At 10.40am the Committee will hear from:

  • Ms Jenny Barksfield, Deputy Chief Executive and Senior Subject Specialist, PSHE Association
  • Mr Adrian Lyons, National Lead for Economics, Business and Enterprise, Ofsted.

Questions the Committee is likely to ask include:

  • Has the addition of financial education to the secondary school curriculum made a difference? Are you aware of any good practice that could be rolled out more broadly?
  • How does the teaching of financial education vary across the secondary school sector?
  • Should Ofsted inspections include an assessment of financial education?
  • How could primary school children be taught about managing money? What would be the biggest challenges to doing this?
  • Who should fund financial education in schools? Are current levels of funding sufficient?

The evidence session will take place at 10.40am on Tuesday 22 November 2016 in Committee Room 2A of the House of Lords.
