The inquiry

The House of Commons Welsh Affairs Committee is to conduct an inquiry into Manufacturing and Trade  in Wales. The  Committee will look at the current state of manufacturing and trade in Wales (both inward and outward investment).

The following are a few of the areas the Committee are particularly interested in:

• The transformation of traditional industrial and rural economies

• UK Government and EU involvement and assistance

• UK Government policy on manufacturing and trade in Wales

• The impact of trade tariffs on Wales

• The maintenance of existing FDI in Wales, and encouragement of new FDI

• The role of R&D in job and wealth creation

• Support for SMEs

• Links between Universities and the productive economy.

Call for written evidence

Interested parties are invited to submit written evidence to the Clerk of the Committee at the address above, to arrive not later than Monday 20 October 2003.  If possible, please supply an electronic version in MS Word or Rich Text format, either by e mail to welshcom@parliament.uk or on a disk.  If submitted by e mail or e mail attachment, a letter should also be sent validating the e mail.  Further guidance on the submission of evidence can be found at: www.parliament.uk/commons/selcom/witguide.htm

Timetable for the inquiry

It is likely that the Committee will hold one oral evidence session in September.  This will be followed by a further announcement on oral evidence sessions in the autumn
