COMMITTEE PUBLISHES PROGRESS PAPER ON CONNECTING PARLIAMENT WITH THE PUBLIC
The House of Commons Modernisation Committee is today publishing a Paper setting out progress on implementing the recommendations in its 2004 Report on
Connecting Parliament with the Public. The Paper was prepared by the House of Commons Board of Management. Achievements so far include:
Plans for a radical redesign of the Parliamentary website, with new content and functionality and improved content management and search tools.
The webcasting site, www.parliamentlive.tv now broadcasts all proceedings in both Chambers and Westminster Hall, as well as an average of 10 select committees each week. The site attracts up to 20,000 visitors a month.
Two new posts have been created in the Parliamentary Education Unit to work with young people, schools and local education authorities.
A Guide for New Voters, to be sent to young people around the time of their 18th birthday, is due for distribution next year.
Construction of a new Visitor Reception Building is due to commence in January 2006. Six Visitor Assistants, recruited specifically for their customer service skills, have been employed since July.
